The NA LCS Support Line

or how to copy the rest of the world

By: Alex Fischer

Each league has their favorites at each position. Whether it's Doublelift making everyone look like trash, Diamond leaving the rest of the junglers in his dust, Balls showing of his muscles in the top lane or Xpeke pulling off his Kassadin, each division of the LCS has their favorite positions and members in that position. However, something has come to my attention recently that I think should be made aware to everyone.

NA LCS is becoming stagnate with it's picks and builds. And no where else is this more obvious then in the support role.

I'll put this in perspective. As of the end of week 5, NA has played a total of 8 supports. (Thresh, Leona, Lulu, Annie, Alistar, Janna, Soraka and Sona.) In week 1 alone over in EU, there were 9 supports played already. (Annie, Thresh, Leona, Lulu, Nunu, Nami, Galio, Morgana and Kennen.) In total, EU has played 15 (Zilean, Zyra, Karma, Sona, Blitzcrank, and Alistar) supports and one of those, Morgana, currently sits with a 100% win rate, as a support and not in mid lane. EDward of Curse Gaming even broke out support Ammumu in the Battle of the Atlantic.Yet, in NA, no one has thought to even touch support Morgana (currently with no picks in NA LCS) or to try something new.

It is not just in NA's support pick up that troubles me, but also their item builds. Currently, the builds go Doren's Shield for first item and then Ancient Coin is first picked 82% of the time. It's almost predictable. I use that word, predictable, because in competitive play, that is a very dangerous thing to do. If enemy teams can predict what you are going to do before you even do it, they can counter strategically and you are already playing from behind when you spawn in to Summoner's Rift for the first time.

In the defense of NA supports, it makes sense to rush for Ancient Coin due to the fact that it currently offers the second highest movement speed buff in the game, can be used on multiple targets and lasts for two seconds longer. This is very handy for engage/disengage/chasing/rushing etc.
What remains to be seen is if NA can start being original with their support picks and builds. Currently, NA is following behind the rest of the world in what to play. Mid Lulu was first played by Zamphira long ago, but it wasn't until she was played over in Korea that EU picked her up and then NA just started to play her as well. It is almost like NA is weeks behind the innovation in the other LoL scenes.

With the LCS now over half way through the Spring Split, I have to admit that I'm beginning to wonder if NA can make a hard push through the World Championships in October if they will even get through the group stage at all. It is often said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. With the way that NA is taking ideas from the rest of LoL, it must be a serious compliment. What needs to be done though is for NA to do something original. Pull out a support no one expects, a Lux or Heimerdinger or even something totally out there like Volibear or Lissandra.

Be innovative instead of imitators NA. It's time for the NA run through the world to begin, but only if they can start thinking for themselves.
Reminds me of this. LOL
