Overwatch’s New Tank And DPS Passives Coming In Season 9

Overwatch is getting a brand new tank and DPS passive coming in Season 9.  And people are rather concerned.

What's Changing With The Passives?

Game Director for Overwatch 2, Aaron Keller, took to official channels to set expectations for the new year.  These announced changes flank a new experimental change coming this weekend for Quick Play. In this post, Keller explained several changes coming in Season 9. "In Season 9, both Tank and Damage heroes will get a modified, tuned-down version of the Support self-healing passive," Keller explained.  This change will stand in addition to the other passives that Tanks and Supports both have in Overwatch 2. Tanks in Overwatch 2 currently have +150 Health in the Role Queue.  They also have +30% Knockback resistance and -30% Ultimate generated from the enemy damaging the Tank.  On top of that Tanks also have -30% Ultimate generated by friendlies healing the Tank. On the other hand, DPS gain a +35% Reload speed for 2.5 seconds after earning an elimination. These changes are set to break open Overwatch 2's metagame. However, which heroes will mostly be affected?

How Could This Affect The Meta?

Flanking heroes like Tracer, Genji, Sombra should see more of a benefit with these new passives coming in Season 9.  It's difficult for support to heal these more mobile heroes in Overwatch 2.  This will allow these flanking heroes more agency to harass the enemy supports and play more independently.  Additionally, tanks will also share in this playstyle change with the new passives coming in Season 9.  Tank heroes like D.Va, Doomfist, and Wrecking Ball should also see a bit of a buff.  These changes directly impact tank heroes who are more autonomous in their positioning.  This will allow these tanks slightly more uptime in the enemy backline.  Another thing this adds to Overwatch 2 is the reduction and reliance on the team's support players.  Previously, select DPS heroes have held a playstyle that is more reliant on health packs due to their aggressive positioning.  If we use that as a precedent, tanks and DPS may have more of a chance to dabble with that same mindset.  With such big changes, how are pro players and prominent community members reacting?

Reactions To The New Overwatch Passive

Pundits and experts from all across the competitive Overwatch community have begun to trickle in. These reactions are mostly tame, due to how difficult it is to tell how severely this will impact Overwatch 2 in Season 9.  Former professional player Roni "LhCloudy" Tiihonen weighed in on these new passives coming in Season 9.  "Self heal on dps and tank good change imo makes games where u have bad supports playable," LhCloudy said.  Former coach to the London Spitfire, Jacob "Spilo" Clifton, also spoke publicly on the changes He explained that this was a "huge buff to flankers, but man I'm unsure how I feel about this change". Additionally, former Los Angeles Valiant player Alex "Seeker" Taylor was confused by the change. Former Los Angeles Gladiators' main support Daniel "FunnyAstro" Hathaway weighed in on this Season 9 change as well.  "Can't wait for 6dmg per bullet tracer to self heal in my team's backline! " Time will tell if this new tank and DPS passive coming in Season 9 will break things up for Overwatch.
