Esports Heaven caught up with Team Adroit's captain Marvin
"Boombacs" Rushton for a quick chat regarding his team's recent performance, dynamics within SEA, patch and more.
Note: This interview with Boombacs was conducted before ESL ONE LA Online was announced.
Hey Boombacs. Thanks for accepting the interview. How are you doing?
I’m doing good! We’ve been gearing up for upcoming tournaments.
Tell us something about yourself to our readers.
My name is Marvin Salvador Rushton. My in-game name is Boomy/Boombacs. I’m currently playing as Team Captain for Team Adroit. I’ve been playing competitive Dota for about 7 years.
How did the current iteration of Team Adroit come to fruition?
This team was formed after my previous team, Team Admiral, disbanded. Bokerino and myself decided to form an all-bisaya team under Team Adroit.
It’s been nearly a year since the team came into existence but the persistence seems to have paid off in the new season. You competed at MDL Chengdu Major as well as qualified for ESL ONE Los Angeles Major, which unfortunately, has been postponed due to Coronavirus. Well, how was the experience competing at the highest level in Chengdu and what is the major takeaway does Adroit take from it?
We weren’t able to compete at our max potential in Chengdu Major because it was our first Major tournament as a team, however, we learnt a lot from that tournament. From laning stage and timings to hero priorities.
Speaking of ESL LA, how disappointing is it that the Major got cancelled and it took away another opportunity for the team to get better on a grand stage amidst the best teams in the world?
Very disappointing but also understandable since it is for the safety of everyone. The team was excited to play for the Major and it would've been a very big boost and learning experience in general since we would be able to play against the top teams from other regions.
Epicenter Major has also been cancelled and we are left out with only one other possible Major and as well as a Minor in this season. My question to you is, has the cancellation of two Majors/Minors added any pressure on your team that is just starting to get their feet onto the grounds?
I wouldn’t say pressured but rather motivated. The cancellation of events is sad for both fans and the organizers but we’re taking every opportunity to get better. So it’s been a motivation to get better and grind harder.
Fnatic, TNC and Geek Fam are the other major competitors in the SEA region besides Adroit. Does having them as your competitors impede or obstruct your path now that we have only one Minor/Major remaining to get that possible direct invite to TI10?
One way to look at it is of course, they are an obstruction, but we don’t have that kind of perspective. We look at them as our friendly rivals, that we could train with, learn from them, hone our craft. If we want to qualify for the Majors and TI10, we must train harder and smarter, we should become the best in the region. There is no easy way.
That being said, how are you spending your time amidst the Coronavirus pandemic besides playing Dota?
Besides Dota scrims and pubs, we play some other games of course, MMORPG and FPS. We watch a lot of TV series, drama and the trending ones. Sometimes we are filming content for our team.
Let’s talk about the new patch. How is 7.25 going to change the way Dota 2 is played? What kind of meta can we expect?
Right now, I can't say much about the right meta since everyone is experimenting a lot. We will know the meta once a Major tournament takes place.
I’ve seen Ursa, Lycan, and Night Stalker having a lot of impact. Is the patch leaning towards a more fast paced style gameplay? Correct me if I’m wrong as well as state your reasons.
I do agree. Fast paced is currently the best style of gameplay today.
If there were beginners playing this patch right now, what advice would you like to give them, for them to win most of their games?
Just have fun playing the game and always PMA.
Lastly, what do you think about the Regional Leagues introduced by Valve for next season? How does it change the competitive nature of the game from the perspective of a player?
For me, it gives an advantage to SEA Region since our region has a lot of potential teams.
Tell us something about your teammates. How do they contribute to the team in terms of shot calling, strategy, etc?
Bokerino is my co-captain who will also do the shot calling. Mac, natsumi and cml are also there to add more ideas especially in strategy.
Alright Boombacs, that’s a wrap. Anything you’d like to say before we wrap this up?
Thank you to everyone! Especially to our fans and sponsors, keep safe and watch out for each other!
