December 5 is when Mauga was finally be released to wreak havoc on the Overwatch 2 servers. However, before you become overrun with trying to piece together his abilities, here is how we'd recommend countering Mauga in Overwatch 2.
DPS
Flanking DPS like Tracer and Sombra are going to be great at countering Mauga. Juggling his attention and having him turn his back will keep his passive overhealth relatively low. When it comes to Tracer, she will rarely be pressured by Mauga. His large hitbox will be a ripe sponge to farm out damage and build quick Pulse Bombs. On the other hand, Sombra is one of the only characters that can stop Mauga's Overrun. Both Hack and EMP will pump his breaks.Going the complete opposite direction you can also attempt to outrange Mauga to counter him. Both of his chain guns seem to be fairly low damage and have limited range. Picks like Echo, Pharah, and even your traditional hitscan heroes should add some counter-play to Mauga.Mei and Bastion both are incredibly hot in terms of the competitive meta right now and great at countering Mauga. Ice Wall both limits Mauga's supports from healing him and may limit his allies from receiving Cardiac Overdrive. On the other hand, Bastion just is a hose of damage that gets to shoot into a big body with no shield. Just your sheer presence will have Mauga playing very carefully.
Tank
Reinhardt's barrier just limits how much his passive overhealth can be stacked. And to be frank, this limits the "juggernaut" archetype. However, keep in mind, it is a race between your shield and his health pool. With how much attention Mauga will require from his supports, any tank that has access to back-line pressure will be good. Heroes like Wrecking Ball and Doomfist should be good counters to Mauga. However, don't get fixed on attempting to deal with him directly. Look to harass his healers and displace him safely when possible. Next up try your hand at Ramattra. Block and his barrier should limit how much critical damage Mauga can deal.Furthermore, Ramattra is going to brute force his way down maps if Mauga isn't given all of the resources. And this creates other opportunities for your team!
Support
The fact that Mauga mitigates damage for his team with healing means that Ana's Biotic Grenade counters Mauga in Overwatch 2. Sleep Dart also hamstrings his positioning however keep in mind: it will not stop his charge, Overrun. Lucio being able to Speed Boost away from Mauga's team during Cardiac Overdrive limits his entire game plan.Illari is going to shred Mauga. The fact we're already seeing high-level players make some impressive plays on their own accord with Illari's offensive kit means that she'll pepper Mauga full of holes. Not only is her healing going to keep up, but her added damage will keep Mauga behind cover more often than not. Images via Blizzard Entertainment
