Amidst a push for financial transparency within the League of Legends community, Team Ember has released salary information for their League squad- as they look to compete in the North American Challenger Series (NACS.)

Jonathon Pan, the cofounder of the team, made the information known in a release via Medium.

“In every other sport, we know how much players make,” Pan said in the release. “It is especially important for esports players to have more information about salaries because they are putting their education on hold for an uncertain future.”

Greyson ‘Goldenglue’ Gilmer, who played for Team 8 during the Summer Split, headlines the Ember lineup with a $65,000 base salary and $27,000 in bonuses.

This news comes in the wake of reports that the average Korean esports player made $21,138 this past season, according to a study by the Korea Creative Industry Research Institute (KCIRI.)

KESPA responded to these reports by releasing their own statistics on currently signed rosters. The supposed average of $57,000 a year has been criticized for its small sampling period, and for failing to include lower-tier teams that have yet to contract players.

“It's up to us to fairly compensate and we think we do,” Bao Lam, a cofounder of Team Ember, said on Twitter. “We felt like our roster was the best mix of talent, drive and attitude.”

It's unclear how most LCS teams will respond to this initiative, but Immortals CEO, Noah Whinston, had already emphasized the importance of public contracts in an interview for Gamespot.

“It's pretty obvious that player salaries need to be public,” Whinston told Travis Gafford.

Although there are vocal supporters within the industry, some players have cautioned that salaries may be best kept from the public eye.

“You are naive if you think that players don't know what organizations are offering and what most of the people earn,” Marcel ‘Dexter’ Feldkamp said on Twitter.

Ember will be competing in the upcoming challenger series, where they look to qualify for the LCS- in contrast to the handful of teams that have purchased LCS slots for sums hovering near a million dollars.

It remains to be seen how Ember’s salaries compare to the rest of the challenger scene, but reports suggest they are far above the average.
